Understanding Canada’s Primary Economic Immigration System

Overview

Express Entry is Canada’s primary system for managing applications for permanent residence under several economic immigration programs. It is designed to select skilled workers who have the potential to contribute to Canada’s economy and labour market.

Launched in 2015, Express Entry uses a points-based ranking system to evaluate candidates based on factors such as age, education, language ability, work experience, and adaptability. Candidates with the highest rankings may receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

Express Entry remains one of the fastest and most popular pathways to Canadian permanent residence.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an online application management system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to process applications for permanent residence under certain economic immigration programs.

Eligible candidates create an online profile and are ranked against other candidates in the Express Entry pool.

Candidates who receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) may submit an application for permanent residence.

How Express Entry Works

Step 1 – Determine Eligibility

Applicants must first qualify under at least one Express Entry program.

Step 2 – Create an Express Entry Profile

Candidates provide information about:

  • Age
  • Education
  • Work experience
  • Language test results
  • Family information
  • Canadian experience (if applicable)

Step 3 – Enter the Express Entry Pool

Once eligible, candidates enter the Express Entry pool and receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.

Step 4 – Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)

IRCC regularly conducts Express Entry draws.

Candidates who meet the selection criteria may receive an ITA.

Step 5 – Submit Permanent Residence Application

Invited candidates typically have a limited period to submit a complete permanent residence application.

Step 6 – Application Processing

IRCC reviews:

  • Eligibility
  • Medical admissibility
  • Criminal admissibility
  • Security screening
  • Supporting documents

What is the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)?

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based system used to rank Express Entry candidates.

Points may be awarded for:

  • Age
  • Education
  • Official language ability
  • Canadian work experience
  • Foreign work experience
  • Spouse factors
  • Additional factors

Higher CRS scores generally increase the likelihood of receiving an Invitation to Apply.

Category-Based Selection

In addition to general draws, IRCC may conduct category-based selections targeting candidates with specific characteristics.

Examples may include:

  • French-language proficiency
  • Healthcare occupations
  • STEM occupations
  • Trades occupations
  • Education occupations
  • Agriculture and agri-food occupations

Category-based selection allows Canada to address specific labour market needs.

Additional CRS Points

Candidates may receive additional points for:

Provincial Nomination

A provincial nomination can significantly increase a candidate’s CRS score.

Canadian Education

Eligible Canadian educational credentials may contribute additional points.

French Language Skills

Additional points may be available for strong French-language proficiency.

Siblings in Canada

Certain family relationships may contribute additional points.

Common Documents Required

Applicants may require:

  • Passport
  • Language test results
  • Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
  • Employment reference letters
  • Police certificates
  • Medical examinations
  • Proof of funds (where applicable)

Requirements vary depending on the program.

Common Reasons for Refusal

Applications may be refused due to:

  • Inaccurate work experience claims

Careful preparation is essential.
